True story: This morning as I was getting my make up on a former client called me, we keep in touch so I wasn’t totally taken by surprise until she started speaking. She sounded like she was in an absolute panic. So, before you were hired, one of my interns made an infographic, she began. I knew where this was going. She used an image that was copywrite’d, copywriter? This woman that I looked up to, she stuttered through her explanation. Her small company was being sued for $850 because her intern had done a quick image search and took a picture that didn’t belong to her. She asked what could be done.
In situations like this there’s isn’t a whole lot that can be done.
-Remove the image immediately
-Do a reverse image search to ensure the image is in fact owned by the company claiming it
-Request that the lower the fee
-Pay the fee
This is becoming a regular occurrence for a number of reasons:
• Most people don’t understand the implication of stealing images off the internet. It’s illegal, don’t do it.
• People think that if you alter an image by 20% or more you can use it free of charge. False, this is a myth.
• Building a visual library can be friggin’ expensive. I dig it!
Here are a few tips to build your visual library, with or without a budget!
• Hire an art student to take your photos, or a hobby photographer!
– Our on staff Photographer Megan is amazing, she does styled Brand Photos (that I LOVE), and stunning Product Photography at really affordable prices. You can have custom photography for your business starting at $100 for a full spread.
• Stock Photography Sites. Sites like Shutterstock allow you to purchase credit which you use to buy images that you’re free to use.
• Free Stock Photo Sites (The Anti-Stock Revolution). These sites contain photos from photographers that give their images away for free (or for credit with use, which means you tag/link them in the post).
Now, because I {heart} you, I’ve created a list of amazing, free image sites just for you!
I hope you have a killer week and rock your visual library.
xo,
Sam
